Not just part of the story, this one is also my website background for the Christmas season. It's called "Winter Landscape," by Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840). And it inspired one of the more suspenseful chapters in the book, as did many of his paintings. He, too, gets a nod in the story, and here:
